Thad Matta has hired Alex Barlow as an assistant coach on his coaching staff at Butler.
Alex Barlow played for Butler and was named Academic All-America during his playing career. He has spent the last eight seasons with the Boston Celtics.
Barlow most recently served as the Maine Celtics’ G-League head coach, leading them to 30 victories in both the Showcase and regular seasons and their first appearance in the playoffs since 2017.
Barlow became the third coach in company history to record 30 victories in a calendar year.
He assisted in the growth of NBA players like Robert Williams, Sam Hauser, Luke Kornet, and Luka Samanic while in Maine.

Alex Barlow career highlight
In 2015, Barlow joined the Celtics as a video assistant under former Butler head coach Brad Stevens, a position he held for two seasons.
He also spent the 2018-19 season in Boston, especially working with then-Celtics rookie Robert Williams.
He spent one season as an assistant coach in the G-League and three seasons as the associate head coach before being appointed head coach for the 2022-23 season.
With an eye towards a future coaching career, Barlow elected to walk on at Butler under Stevens.
Later in his career, he received a scholarship and helped the Bulldogs to NCAA Tournament appearances in 2013 and 2015.
He was known as a tough defender, and his 187 career steals rank fourth on Butler’s record.
During his Butler career, the point guard has 274 assists, among the top 20 in Butler’s history.
