Dr. Chang Case Killer: 3 People Were Found Guilty
Upon Victor Chang’s death, the preliminary inquiries suggested that three people were involved.
Due to the severity of the crime and its apparent intention, police authorities began to look into possible links to the crime.
But as the inquiry went on, it became evident that the murder was the product of a failed amateur extortion effort.
One of the attackers, Chew Seng Liew, entered a guilty plea to the murder charge. Later, he was given a 26-year prison term with a 20-year non-parole period in 1992.
Similarly, Choon Tee Lim, the accomplice who claimed ignorance of Liew’s firearm possession, pursued a different legal route.
Lim was ultimately given a sentence that varied from 18 to 24 years.
Likewise, Stanley Ng, who gave up on the extortion scheme just one day before Chang was killed, was another participant in this gruesome scheme.
Ng had made two attempts to place Chang under arrest in an attempt to coerce him into taking $3 million out of the bank.
Parole hearings gained prominence in the public eye years after the convictions.
Choon Tee Lim’s 2009 parole award caused a stir in the public and resulted in a temporary suspension until further proceedings.
Furthermore, the release of Lim in 2010 and Liew in 2012 sparked discussions over the efficiency of the parole system and how to strike a balance between public safety and rehabilitation.
